With Kylie Jenner poised to become the world's youngest self-made billionaire at 20, people online are asking, "Is she really self-made?"
Forbes magazine recently featured model, entrepreneur, socialite, and social media personality Kylie Jenner as the youngest self-made (almost) billionaire in the world. At only 20 years old, with a net worth of US$900 million, the makeup magnate is now richer than her sisters, JK Rowling, and even Mark Zuckerberg.
It’s hard to imagine that only 5 years ago, Kylie was still in high school.
However, even with Kylie’s success, some people are debating if she truly is a self-made billionaire. Some argue that since she was born into a rich family, she wasn’t self-made. While others say that even if that’s the case, she still struck it out on her own.
So, is Kylie Jenner really a self-made billionaire?
What is a self-made billionaire?
First off, it’s important to know what it means to be a self-made billionaire. The dictionary defines the term “self-made” as “made by oneself” or “having become successful or rich by one’s own efforts.”
Kylie got her start almost 5 years ago, when she was still in high school. She started a Tumblr blog called Kalifornia Klasss, where she posted various artworks and photos. Eventually, through the popularity of her family’s show “Keeping Up With The Kardashians,” and her Instagram page, Kylie became the social media superstar we all know her to be.
She also became a model, and started earning 7 digits through various campaigns and endorsement deals.
However, she didn’t stop there. In 2015, Kylie announced that she would be starting a lipstick line under the name Kylie Cosmetics.
She used her connections, her social media influence as well as her fame (or infamy) as a means to market her products. Her business grew, and Kylie built a US$900 million fortune in less than 3 years. And the icing on the top of the cake is that Kylie owns 100% of her company.
She worked hard for her success
Even if we argue that Kylie was born with a silver spoon in her mouth, she still managed to establish a company that’s worth almost a billion dollars. That’s clearly no easy feat!
If you take a closer look at Kylie Cosmetic’s history, you’ll see that it had very humble beginnings. She started her business through Shopify, and eventually made it grow to what it is today.
It’s surprising to see how much business savvy Kylie has. After all, her image on social media doesn’t necessarily ooze business savvy.
However, it’s important to know that she did work hard for her success. She didn’t simply pay other people to work for her or handle her money for her. She built her brand from the ground up, and, she did it all on her own.
When she started her company, she used the money she had saved up from her modeling gigs abroad. She started with 15,000 lip kits and marketed it on social media. There’s a reason why companies these days rely heavily on social media, and Kylie Jenner is the best example of that.
Kylie used her social media influence as a means of acquiring customers and cementing their loyalty. Kylie posts frequent updates on social media, and uses it to set the trend and establish Kylie Cosmetics as “the brand to be” when it comes to cosmetics.
She might not have a rags-to-riches story, but you can’t discount the fact that Kylie has business sense, and she knows how to sell her brand and her product well.
