We knew Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s highly anticipated wedding would be expensive, but it turns out that the upcoming royal wedding cost will be even bigger than that of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s 2011 wedding.

Wedding planning company Bridebook estimates that this upcoming wedding will cost around£32 million (around S$59 million) — which is £12 million (S$22 million) more than Prince William and Kate’s £20 million wedding (S$37 million).

A royal wedding cost breakdown: The top 5 expenses

With £90,000 going to silver-plated trumpets to announce the couple and £26,000 going to sausage rolls alone, no expense will be spared for this royal wedding.

1. Security: £30 million (S$55 million)

Like Will and Kate’s wedding, the bulk of the upcoming wedding expenses will go to security. A whopping £30 million was spent for Will and Kate’s wedding, and we can expect similar security at Meghan and Harry’s nuptials.

The will include snipers, undercover police, military tech, and possibly even drones.

2. Venue: £350,000 (S$640,000)

Following tradition, Harry and Meghan will be wed at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, with receptions at St. George’s Great Hall and a luxury marquee in the Upper Ward grounds of Windsor.

Though the couple won’t have to pay for the venue, they do need to pay for a luxury marquee, which costs £300,000 — not including the catering, security, and staff adjoining marquees.

3. Dress: £300,000 (S$552,000)

Bridebook expects Meghan to spend £300,000 on her wardrobe, with most of the budget going towards her first dress. Judging from Meghan’s fashion sense, we can expect to see a classic, clean design.

4. Music: £300,000 (S$552,000)

The wedding will have bell ringers, organists, choirs, reception musicians, and a wedding band and DJ. Like Will & Kate, who had Ellie Goulding sing for their first dance, the couple will also probably have a famous celebrity perform at the celebrations.

Rumour has it that the Spice Girls or Elton John will be performing, but it might also be Chris Martin from Coldplay (he’s a friend of Harry’s), or even Rihanna.

5. Food: £286,000 (S$526,000)

Harry and Meghan will be feeding a lot of hungry mouths on their wedding day.

The royal wedding will have 800 guests attending the ceremony and the formal reception. Then 600 people will attend the private evening reception. The lunch reception is estimated to cost £100 per guest, while the dinner reception might cost around £300 per guest.

Apart from that, the couple have invited 2,640 members of the public to Windsor, giving each one a hot tea and a snack. This will be £10 per head, so basically £26,000 on sausage rolls alone!

“Whilst every wedding is expensive, the mix of royalty, Hollywood and global attention, Harry and Meghan’s will no doubt be the global wedding of the decade,” says Hamish Shepard, founder of Bridebook. “A beautiful American actress marrying a caring British Prince in a royal castle could easily be a fairytale in itself, so the whole world will be watching and wishing them well.

The cost of a marriage at a Registry Office in the UK is £46, so at 32,000 times the cost, this is clearly is going to be an incredible occasion!”
