It's been so long! (That's what she said.)
If you’re one of the millions of people who were absolutely devastated when NBC’s The Office ended after 9 seasons, we’ve got awesome news for you: NBC is planning to bring back the show for another season!
TV Line reports that The Office revival will still be set at the familiar Scranton branch of paper company Dunder Mifflin, and will feature both new and old cast members. We know what most of you are thinking: will Steve Carrell be reprising his role as the painfully awkward branch manager Michael Scott?
That’s a bummer, but then again, the last two Carrell-less seasons were still hilarious, so we’ve got high hopes. The network is reported to be currently searching for a regional manager.
The Office revival: Who’s coming back to Dunder Mifflin?
The Office was based on a BBC series created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. Its award-winning ensemble cast included Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Mindy Kaling, BJ Novak, Ellie Kemper, and Ed Helms.
There hasn’t been any news on who exactly will be coming back to The Office revival, but Angela Kinsey told Us earlier this year that she would love to reprise her role as the surly accountant Angela Martin.
“I would love it, but I have no idea,” she said. “Everybody is doing so many things, but sign me up!”
Other NBC relaunches
This isn’t the first time NBC has decided to relaunch a popular sitcom. This confirmation comes hot on the heels of the release of a brand new season of beloved comedy Will & Grace. The new season has been wildly successful, earning several Golden Globe nominations, including one for Best Comedy Series.
It’s no wonder, then, that network executives want to duplicate Will & Grace’s success with another revival. But rumours about another The Office season started way before the relaunch of Will & Grace.
NBC president Bob Greenblatt told Deadline a month prior to the Will & Grace relaunch that he wanted to revive The Office (as well as 30 Rock, The West Wing, ER).
“We often talk about The Office,” he said. “I’ve talked to [The Office creator] Greg [Daniels] four times over the past few years. It’s always, ‘ Maybe someday, but not now.’”
Thankfully, “someday” came sooner than we thought!
