The world's most expensive weddings are just as insane and jaw-dropping as you'd think.
Weddings are getting more and more expensive, but typically not this much. The world’s most expensive weddings cost millions of dollars and more — the rich really know how to throw a party!
World’s 10 Most Expensive Weddings
10. Coleen McLoughlin and Wayne Rooney: $8 million
In 2008, footballer Wayne Rooney married his childhood sweetheart Coleen McLoughlin in a 330-year-old Italian villa, under a Louis XVI chandelier. Guests were flown in from England on a private jet, and prior to the wedding, the sweethearts hosted a masked ball on a yacht. But not everyone was impressed by the extravagant celebrations. The Telegraph reports that the Italian press said the couple have “lots of money but little taste.” Ouch.
9. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West: $12 million
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years, you’ve come across Kimye’s wedding photos at one point or another, but especially around 2014, when they were absolutely everywhere. Whether you love them or hate them, you can’t deny that their wedding was 100% gorgeous.
But of course, all that came at quite a price. Their Italian venue cost them $410,000. Kim’s gown alone cost half a million dollars; it was so precious that it had its own hotel room at the five-star Villa San Michele hotel! For their guests, they hired private jets, rented expensive hotel rooms, and even hired a $65,000 glam squad — so nobody would show up looking like a schlub and ruining the photos, of course.
8. Priya Sachdev and Vikram Chatwal: $20 million
Hotelier/actor Vikram Chatwal and model/actress Priya Sachdev’s wedding lasted 10 days and was held in three different cities in India. With 600 guests from 26 countries being flown around on chartered jets, no wonder their wedding bills amounted to $20 million.
But the lavish celebrations now serve as proof that the amount of money you pour into your wedding doesn’t matter in the long run. Vikram and Priya soon divorced. Just last year, she remarried, tying the knot with Sunjay Kapur, the ex-husband of actress Karisma Kapoor, in a wedding that was elegant, but not anywhere close to the $20 million affair she threw for her first marriage.
7. Aleksandra Nikolic and Andrey Melnichenko: $30 million
5. Kate Middleton and Prince William: $34 million
Easily one of the most iconic (and historic) weddings of this century, Kate Middleton and Prince William’s royal wedding cost a whopping $34 million, reports CBS News.
But as far as royal weddings go, theirs was quite low-key. $32 million of that went to security, though the bride did end up wearing a dress that cost almost half a million dollars.
4. Vanisha Mittal and Amit Bhatia: $60 million, 2005
When your dad’s the richest person in India, you’d expect no less than a multimillion-dollar shindig for a wedding. And that’s exactly what Vanisha Mittal got when she wed her banker fiance Amit Bhatia.
Their engagement ceremony was held in the Palace of Versailles, while the wedding took place at the 17th century Chateau Vaux le Vicomte, Forbes reports. Pop star Kylie Minogue performed while fireworks set off from the Eiffel Tower.
3. Diana Spencer and Prince Charles —$70 million (in today’s dollars)
It was a fairytale wedding complete with a horse and carriage that captivated the world. But like their son’s wedding, most of the wedding budget (if you can even call it that) went to security and crowd control.
2. Princess Salama to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan — $100 million (in today’s dollars)
When the current Emir of Dubai married Princess Salama, he had a 20,000-seat stadium built especially for it. It was a seven-day celebration that had the sheikh visiting every town in Dubai by horseback to feed the locals.
During the ceremony, 20 bejewelled camels delivered wedding gifts to his bride, who, following Bedouin tradition, remained cloistered in her room for the duration of the celebration.
1. Khadija Uzhakhovs and Said Gutseriev — $1 BILLION
In 2016, a Russian billionaire’s 28-year-old son Said Gutseriev married 20-year-old dentistry student Khadija Uzhakhovs in Moscow’s famous Safisa restaurant. The nuptials cost a BILLION dollars. JLo, Sting, and Enrique Iglesias performed. The bride wore a million-dollar Elie Saab gown that was so heavy that she needed assistance to move around in it.
