Boxing, politics, music, and now crypto — is there anything the Pacman won't do?
Manny Pacquiao is primarily known for his boxing skills, but he’s also a politician, a recording artist(!), and now, the founder of a new cryptocurrency. Yup, you read that right — the Manny Pacquiao cryptocurrency is going to be a real thing.
He’s not the first athlete to get involved in cryptocurrency. Before him, Floyd Mayweather promoted startup Centra’s ICO in 2017. Just last month, former England footballer Michael Owen announced his plans to launch his own cryptocurrency Own.
Pacquiao will be releasing the “PAC Token” later this year via the Singapore-based Global Crypto Offering Exchange (GCOX). This cryptocurrency will allow fans to buy his merchandise, as well as interact with him through live streams and more.
“It can be a way to be in touch with the fan base and (there are) a lot of things we can do with this cryptocurrency,” the boxer told AFP.
Pacquiao is currently listed as the world’s 20th highest-paid athlete of all time. He’s earned over US$510 million over the course of his career.
Manny Pacquiao Cryptocurrency in the Philippines
Pacquiao’s entry into the cryptocurrency world comes right at the heels of Asian governments beginning to seriously monitor the crypto space, especially after its fluctuations and the hacking of Japanese crypto exchange Coincheck.
“It is already regulated in other countries,” Pacquiao said of cryptocurrencies, saying that he would support government regulation of cryptocurrencies.
