How much do Japanese porn stars make? Ex-porn actress Erina Okazaki tells all in one interview.

Ever wondered what it’s like to be a porn star? How much do Japanese porn stars make? Ex-porn actress Emiri Okazaki bares all in an interview on YouTube channel AsianBoss.

Who is Emiri Okazaki?

Okazaki joined the entertainment industry at the young age of 16. She dreamed of making it big, but in 2011, when she turned 21, she realised that her career wasn’t going anywhere. She became very frustrated.

“I felt like I wasn’t going anywhere,” she says.

That’s when she decided to do porn.

She worked as a porn star from 2011-2016, and here’s what she had to say about her experience.

Porn stars are paid according to their popularity, she says. When she first started, she would get around $10,000 to $30,000 (S$13,000 to S$40,000) for a single shoot. Some actresses would get paid $100,000 (S$130,000) a shoot.

Other actresses would get paid around $2,000 to $6,000 (S$2,600 to S$8,000) per shoot. Some jobs, like those that just needed actresses to show their breasts for an hour, would pay $150 to $200 (S$200 to S$270).

Male porn stars, she says, have tougher work conditions than their female counterparts. They’re paid less, and it can take a while before they are given bigger parts.

These actors start as “liquid actors” who are paid $20 (S$26) to jack off on camera. After a while, these actors are “promoted” to videos where they receive blow jobs, but aren’t allowed to touch the actresses. On the next level, they have sex with the actresses.

“They have a long way to go to become a professional,” Okazaki says.

Not an easy job

Being a porn star isn’t as easy as simply having sex on camera. The sex is “completely different” from normal sex, she says.

You’re always thinking about how you look on camera, she says. “People think that porn stars are genuinely good at sex, but I think that’s false,” Okazaki says. “They’re better at presentation.”

Some shoots would have her on set from 7 am to 4 am the next day. Porn stars could work up to 28 days a month, depending on their popularity. This meant that they would have only two rest days a month, and on these rest days, they would often schedule “handshake days”, or meetups with fans.

“So actually, no rest days,” she says.

The fierce competition

In the beginning, Okazaki enjoyed raking in a lot of money from consistent sales. But staying relevant in the porn industry is easier said than done.

“There are always new girls,” she says.

When the number of her sales dropped, she didn’t even have to look at the sales figures. “You understand what’s going on because people no longer want to work with you,” she says. “The money that you make decreases, and the porn that you make becomes more extreme, but the results don’t improve.”

She wasn’t prepared for the emotional toll…

The night before her first shoot, she was so nervous that she couldn’t sleep at all. She confesses that after shoots, she would often break down in tears.

“There are actually a lot of girls who cry during filming,” she says.

To keep herself from crying on set, Okazaki says that she would imagine that it wasn’t really her on the set, but another actress. But once she got home, she’d often suddenly start crying.

“I wasn’t even sure while I was crying,” she says. “It’s like multiple emotions hit me at once.”

At that point, she was with her boyfriend of five years. When she told him about her new job, he “went psycho”.

“No joke, he threatened to first kill me and then kill himself afterwards,” she says.

Luckily for both of them, her boyfriend came to his senses before he hurt anyone.

Telling her parents was similarly heart-wrenching for Okazaki. She was disowned by her mother, who blocked Okazaki’s calls for six months. She wouldn’t even let her in the house.

Eventually, her mother finally made peace with Okazaki, saying:

“I will never understand your career or ever support you. But you are my daughter and that will never change. So from now on, I will only interact with you as my daughter.”

Why she quit

When she first started doing porn, people she knew in school would talk badly about her. But after gaining popularity, these same people suddenly started inviting her to come to their events, offering payment in exchange.

“I wanted to reach a certain level in the entertainment industry, and when they reached out, that’s when I felt I made it,” she says.

After reaching her goal, she felt like she could finally stop doing porn.

Today, Okazaki has her own cosmetics company, and also works at a hostess bar in Roppongi.

Her advice to young people thinking about going into porn? “Think it over,” she says. “I have seen so many girls regret it.”

One girl started working at a bank but was forced to quit 2-3 months later after the company found out about her past. Okazaki also points out that having romantic relationships is trickier when you work/have worked as a porn actress.

But Okazaki does not regret becoming a porn actress. “I wouldn’t be the person I am today.”
